Sowing Change
In a small village nestled in the mountains of northern Pakistan, 11-year-old Faseeha lived with her family in a modest house made of mud bricks. Her father worked as a farmer, and her mother sold handmade embroidered shawls at the local bazaar. Life was simple but often challenging.
One day at school, Faseeha’s teacher, Miss Saba, drew a colorful chart on the blackboard. At the top were the words Sustainable Development Goals. “These are global goals to make the world a better place for everyone,” She explained. “Today, we’ll focus on the first three goals: No Poverty, Zero Hunger, and Good Health and Well-being.”
No Poverty-SDG 1
Miss Saba told them about children who couldn’t go to school because they had to work, families who didn’t have enough food, and people who couldn’t see a doctor when they got sick. Faseeha’s heart sank. She knew her family and neighbors faced many of these challenges.
That evening, as Faseeha helped her mother prepare roti for dinner, she asked, “Ammi, why do some people in our village have to sleep hungry?”
Her mother sighed. “Sometimes the crops don’t grow well, and there’s not enough money to buy food. It’s a hard life for many families.”
Faseeha thought about this as she lay in bed. “If only there were a way to help everyone,” she whispered to herself. Then an idea sparked in her mind—a big idea.
Village Help Club
The next morning, Faseeha shared her idea with her best friends, Abeeha and Hadia. “We’ll create a ‘Village Helper Club’ to solve these problems. Everyone can do something to help!”
Abeeha raised an eyebrow. “How can kids like us help with such big issues?”
“We can start small,” Faseeha said confidently. “First, we’ll grow vegetables and share them with families who need food.”
Hadia nodded. “My grandfather has seeds we can use. Let’s ask him!”
That weekend, the three friends cleared a small piece of land near the school with the help of Hadia’s grandfather. They planted tomatoes, spinach, and carrots. Every day after school, they watered the plants and removed weeds.
A few months later, their garden began to flourish. The children harvested the vegetables and packed them into baskets. They delivered them to families in need, starting with an older couple who lived alone.
“This is from our Village Help Club,” Faseeha said with a smile.
The old woman’s eyes filled with tears. “May Allah bless you, my child.”
Word spread quickly, and more children joined the club. They brainstormed new ways to help. Abeeha suggested organizing a health camp, and Hadia proposed sewing reusable cloth bags to sell and raise funds.
The Health Camp
Faseeha’s uncle, a nurse in the nearby town, agreed to help. Together, they organized a free health camp in the village. Dozens of people came to get their blood pressure checked, learn about hygiene, and ask questions about their health.
At the camp, Faseeha noticed a boy her age, Asjad, sitting quietly in a corner. She approached him and asked, “Why aren’t you in school?”
Asjad looked down. “My father passed away, and I work at the tea stall to help my family.”
Faseeha’s heart ached. She shared Asjad’s story with Miss Saba, who spoke to the local elders. Together, they found a way for Asjad to attend school part-time while continuing to support his family.
A Brighter Future
Over time, the Village Helper Club transformed the community. Families shared extra food, children taught each other how to read, and the health camp became a monthly event. Faseeha realized that even small efforts could create big changes.
One evening, as she watched the sunset from her rooftop, Faseeha smiled. She remembered Miss Saba’s lesson and how the SDGs weren’t just goals—they were dreams that everyone could help achieve.
“Together, we can make the world better,” she thought, “starting with our little village.”
